Almost every evening nowadays, I take my daughter Aanya to the near-by park and make her run with me. To keep her motivated for the running exercise, I purposefully run slow so that she can always “win” and “come first”. A few days ago, something very interesting happened. After a few rounds of her winning the race, I told her that I never came first. Hearing this she said to me, ‘Papa, since you want to come first, so I’ll run slow.’ And indeed she did that! I came and told Shalini about this. On hearing this, Shalini laughed and laughed. At that very time it inspired me to think that we all are like so. In every situation, we want to come first – rather than slow down to wait for God, our Father, to come first. When we cannot see God working behind the scenes for us, we think either He is too slow or we do not know what He might be doing. So we start making our own permutations and fasten ahead thinking we can do a better job than God.
Well, God is the Lord, the Almighty. Through Him everything in this world comes forth and goes back. How can we underestimate His capability to run slower than us? As I write, I am remembering the lines of a worship song of Don Moen that say– ‘God, forgive me for I’ve made you small in my eyes.’ When we don’t trust God, do not wait upon Him, do not trust Him and rather doubt Him, we actually make Him small in our eyes and that is when we start to mess up our lives. It is difficult, I agree, to trust God and be patient, but that is exactly what we ought to do and practice and believe that He is working behind the scenes for us to make us win. For this the easiest way to is to slow down and say – ‘God, I give this situation to you. Make me do what you want me to do about this. Take it from me.’ Simple! That’s how you can practice running slow to wait on God and win the race of life! God Bless – Vinay Mehta
